There was a good turn-out of over three-hundred mixed ability entrants at Conwy parkrun last Saturday morning for the final event of 2024, with many club and social athletes travelling from far afield.
Thankfully, the weather was near perfect, which was in stark contrast to the previous week, and it remained a good festive atmosphere as runners looked forward to the New Year celebrations.
North Wales Road Runners entered thirteen members and recorded four age category victories and two new course PBs. Gold medal winning track athlete Steve Gardner, fresh from his success in the Welsh Masters indoor 3000m championships, made a rare parkrun appearance and led the team home in 8th place overall with a new PB of 19 minutes and 11 seconds, to win his VM60 cat.
Steve was closely followed by colleague Will Williams in 11th place in 19.24, and he too won his VM50 cat in 19.24. Adam Lemalle was also in good form again and he was pleased 20th place plus a new PB of 21.16, and he claimed the 2nd spot in his VM40 cat.
Carla Green was the 4th female finisher, and she won her VW50 age cat in 58th place overall in 23.56, whilst Daniel Owens ran with his guide Richard Scamans, and he was 81st in 25.20, with Richard one place and one second behind.
Hannah Griffith had an impressive run finishing in 108th place in 26.19, and 3rd in her VW50 cat, with master vets Rob Fryer and Don Hale, both enjoying good runs, with Rob 109th and 1st VM70 cat in 26.21, and Don was 115th in 26.36, and 2nd place in the same age cat as Rob.
Veteran Alan Davies and John O’Shea ran well, with Alan 168th in 30.00, and John O’Shea 200th in 31.51; and it was good to see fellow veteran Sue Smith back in action at Conwy after a long break, and on her birthday. Sue finished 234th in 34.50, and she was 4th in her VW60 age cat. Meanwhile, Steve Mason continued with his tail-sweeping duties accompanied by his dog Coco, and they finished 287th in 50.50.
*The first finisher at Conwy parkrun was SM20 athlete Morgan Kendall (Meirionnydd RC) – this time without his famous banana man costume – in a fast time of 17.12, with VM35 Dave Hughes in close pursuit, and he was just 13-seconds adrift, despite a new PB in 17.25, with Hamish Morton (Cambridge & Coleridge AC), 3rd in 17.58.
*The first female finisher was SW25 athlete Anna Drinkwater (Eryri Harriers), who celebrated her 300th parkrun, including 54 at Conwy, and she was 6th overall, in 18.56; with SW20 Mia Williams, the 2nd female, (and 43rd overall), with a PB of 23.01, whilst Gemma Moore (Eryri Harriers), ran with her child buggy and still claimed the 3rd place in 23.18. There 303 finishers.
*Praise was given to the Conwy run director Gwyn Williams and to all the volunteers and marshalls. This is a link to the provisional results:
