Gold medal winners at the Welsh Masters 3000m championships at Cardiff...plus January indoor updates.

Brett Davis, a director of WMAL has just confirmed the gold medal winners and results from the various 3000m championship races for both male and female athletes from last Sunday at the Cardiff Indoor Stadium.

North Wales Road Runner Steve Gardner made the long journey south once again to record an excellent time in his veteran M60 age category in a time of 10 minutes and 37 seconds to claim a new PB.

After his event Steve, who deservedly struck gold, later said: “I competed at the 3000m champs in Cardiff yesterday, and I was very pleased with my performance in a time of 10.37, which was a new pb for me, 25 seconds faster than my previous outdoor time set earlier in the year. The PB was most satisfying for me.”

Most photos by John Hatton. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   Nearly four-hundred athletes took part in the ever-popular Arthur Bebbington Twin Piers 10k race last Saturday despite the cold weather, a cool headwind, and a massive water shortage, with severe restrictions affecting over 40,000 Conwy area residents. With no water available throughout the area, and many shops and businesses closed due to no loos, café’s, or any available washing facilities, race organisers from Colwyn Bay AC, worked miracles to ensure the event went ahead as planned with extra porta-loos provided at the start and finish, to cater for the runners, with many travelling from all parts of the UK. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com It was a very cold start for the first Conwy parkrun of 2025 as 247 mixed ability athletes tackled the puddle-filled, but picturesque 5k course, from the RSPB Nature Reserve last Saturday morning. Despite the freezing temperatures,  Iain Burgess  set a very hot pace as the 1st finisher in just 18 minutes and 36 seconds to win his VM35 age cat, and he was some 36-seconds ahead of his nearest rival, VM40  Richard Wilyman (GOG Triathlon), in 19.08, with SM25  Aaron Jones  3rd in 19.49. Llio Owen  was the 1st female finisher with a new PB of 21.23, and she won her SW20 age cat (13th overall), with VW40 athlete  Vicky Cole  (GOG Triathlon), 2nd (19th overall) with a fine run in 22.05, and VW35  Emma Stanley  claimed the 3rd place, (21st overall) in 22.15. Report by Don Hale https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com   Road Runner and super-vet Dave Gardner struck gold at the North Wales Indoor Championships at Coleg Cambria, Deeside, last Sunday by winning his M85 age category in the shot-put competition. Dave also improved on his previous PB and winning performance from last year when he competed in the M80 cat with a superb throw of 7.26m, which is also expected to be a national record. He later obtained a deserved podium place and collected a prestigious gold medal for his sterling efforts. TEAM NEWS FOR THE INTER-AREA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com This is the latest news regarding the team selections for the Inter-Area indoor championships from Brett Davis of Welsh Masters Athletics Ltd (WMAL). Please find attached the men's team as it currently stands for the Interarea at Lee Valley on 16th February 2025 . The are some gaps in the team whereas the shaded bits are where that age group does not do that event. I am still waiting for a couple of replies from people I have emailed. MENAI TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETIC CLUB SAVED FROM CLOSURE. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   The Menai Track & Field Club looks as though it has finally been rescued from the threat of closure following an urgent appeal, which began last November, when member Georgina Seguin first raised the issue and appealed for support. Georgina, who is an active Menai club athlete, and participates in the North Wales cross county league fixtures, originally explained that the club, with over 170 juniors and about 20 seniors, faced closure due to a lack of willing volunteers and officials. She was keen to hear from people with any ideas to help save the club, to come forward as soon as possible, and also mentioned a need to fill several committee roles.
