Troy Kettle wins North Wales “Best Young Athlete of the Year" award.

Report by Don Hale.   NWRRC runner Troy Kettle has won the “Best Young Athlete” of the year award following a superb performance for the North Wales County team in the Inter-Counties match at Meerbrook. Student Troy made his debut in the 15km race and excelled in the famous orange and green strip and knocked five minutes off his previous time at the open race in Staffordshire in 2019, this time finishing 27th overall in 69 minutes 49 seconds, and helping his team secure the runners-up spot. *The overall competition winners for the Men were Shropshire with 20 pts, with  North Wales  2nd with 29 points, Staffordshire 3rd with 36 pts, Cheshire 4th with 74 pts, and Derbyshire 5th with 84 pts. This included:  2. Ryan Davis 52:44; 3. Scott Nixon 52:47; 8. Joel Gomes 54:27; 16. Phil Pumford 57:35; 24. Jez Brown 62:04; and 27.  Troy Kettle 69:49. *Fo

Report by Don Hale.   Promising young Road Runner Troy Kettle (*pictured above top) made his debut for North Wales last Saturday in the tough Inter-Counties challenge race staged within the Meerbrook 15k in Staffordshire. Student Troy made a very impressive start to his representative career and helped the county team to claim the runners-up spot against some quality opposition. The NWRRC athlete finished 27th overall in 69 minutes 49 seconds. Troy’s talented father, and a highly respected top athletics coach, Jonathan Kettle remarked: ‘ Well Done to Troy  o n his debut race for the North Wales team in the toughest race I know. NEWS UPDATE: Richard Eccles sets new course record at Conwy parkrun.

*Richard Eccles - set a new course record for his age with a PB at Conwy. North Wales runners take the plaudits at Conwy parkrun. Report by Don Hale. Photographs by Steve Jeffery.   Conwy Parkrun welcomed over three-hundred mixed ability athletes to the picturesque yet puddle-filled course at the RSPB site last Saturday, but it was Richard Eccles and team mates from North Wales Road Running club who took the plaudits, with some exceptional performances as the drizzle closed in. NWRRC entered fifteen members and packed well with four runners finishing in the top-ten and seven of the team also claimed age category wins, two second, and three third place awards, in addition to claiming three new parkrun PBs. And in addition,  Richard Eccles  set a remarkable new course record for his age group by ten-seconds! Jonathan Kettle  was the first club man home in 17 minutes 35 seconds, and won his VM45-49 cat, but this time he had to settle for 4th place overall behind some superb visiting elite

TROY KETTLE TACKLED TOUGH ANGLESEY FIRELIGHTER ULTRA-DISTANCE CHALLENGE RACE Report by Don Hale. Photographs courtesy of the Kettle family. North Wales Road Runner Troy Kettle continued his love of ultra-distance events and finished 9th last Friday in the highly challenging Anglesey Ring of Fire – Firelighter race – which involved tackling a 35.7-mile course (57.2kms) with a 2880 ft of elevation (877m). Troy was the youngest ever finisher and this race added to his recent experience of running sections of Anglesey’s spectacular coastal paths. The Firelighter race is part of the major 135-mile Ring of Fire Coastal ultra-marathon event, which is staged over three days around Yns Mon. *Troy is pictured awaiting starters orders at the Anglesey Firelighter event. His race was identified as a “taster” run over a shorter distance, and a chance to compete on Day 1 of this established and prestigious event but it’s a tough ultra-marathon race in its own right. Youngest ever runner Troy Kettle finished 10 th  in Cybi Coastal Marathon. Report by Don Hale.   Teenage endurance athlete Troy Kettle finished a magnificent 10th overall in the highly challenging Cybi Coastal Marathon last weekend. The North Wales Road Runner completed this gruelling trail course in just 4 hours 1 minute and 56 seconds and is understood to be the youngest ever finisher. Photographs by Steve Jeffery and Jonathan Kettle   Three NWRRC members took part in the gruelling Ras Tal y Fan fell race at Rowen last Saturday in very hot and humid conditions, with plucky Vicky Taylor snatching 2nd place in her respective age category. Said to be one of the toughest runs on the local North Wales fell racing circuit, the race is staged over varied terrain with nearly 800m of ascent and offered a stern challenge to all competitors over an 8-mile plus course.  The first two miles are said to be the most difficult, and host organisers, Club Rhedwyr Eyri Harriers, stated that entrants needed be able to navigate their way around the course, as although marshalls are at the checkpoints, and at the various gates and stiles around the course, the route is unmarked, and prior fell running experience is recommended. North Wales Road Runners followed up their recent team success and excellent podium placings in the British Masters one-mile race, with a further two gold and two silver podium positions in the Welsh Athletics two-mile championships held last weekend. In another high-quality virtual event, some eleven club runners accepted the challenge of competing in a unique time-trial type dash on a course of their own choosing, and subject to strict pandemic restrictions.  The star-billing of the race was confirmed by a fact the first nineteen runners dipped under 11-minutes, and there was just 13-seconds separating the top-three finishers.  The overall event was won by Richard Jones (Lliswerry Runners), 1 st  M45 cat winner in 10 mins 16 secs, with (Colwyn Bay AC) youngster James Smith taking 2 nd  plac
