Conwy surgery duo all set for a hot 100k Sahara Desert Trek for St David’s Hospice...
Report by Don Hale.
Two daring members of the Bodreinallt doctors’ surgery team at Conwy are busy preparing to take part in an amazing Sahara Desert Charity Trek, which is a gruelling 100k event across the hot Sahara Desert in just 5 days, to help raise funds for St David’s Hospice.
Practice manager Sarah Corkish-Brown and Practice Nurse Emily Carr have signed up for this huge undertaking, which is scheduled to take place in Morocco between 1st-8th November.
The event organisers claim entrants can ‘rediscover true adventure in the awe-inspiring Sahara Desert.’ The five-day trek covers 100km passing through Morocco’s forbidding landscape punctuated by peaks, gorges, dunes and oases. At night, they will sleep under Africa’s star strewn skies and enjoy traditional Berber hospitality.
Emily added this week: “In case you have forgotten…me and Sarah Cornish-Brown are completely insane, and we are TREKKING 100km ACROSS THE SAHARA in a few weeks! This is to raise vital funds for St David’s Hospice who took such good care of Mum in her final weeks.
“We are still a way off our target and could really do with your help. Please are you able to donate anything to this very, very good cause? I promise it’ll be worth it to see me and Sarah hanging out of our arses in the desert, thank you.”
This challenge goes beyond the Jebel Saghro region, starting on the Maider El Kbir plateau, before ascending Jebel El Mrakib, and admiring the stunning views. Walking through palm gorges, the route joins the dry Rhris River and heads towards an oasis of tamarisk trees.
The final days are spent trekking along the Tikertouachene River, before celebrating a successful end to the challenge in Ouarzazate. This trek is said to be ‘challenging, unforgiving, and life changing.’
Sarah’s sister and Emily’s mother, Mandy Carr (nee Corkish) passed away peacefully at St David’s Hospice in May 2024, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The family are so grateful for all the support that Mandy received at the time, that they have decided to do something completely outside of their comfort zone to help raise funds.
Sarah added: “To all my friends please, please think about donating to such a worthy cause. Seeing all the work they did to make my sister’s final weeks comfortable was humbling.”
*They have placed some posters at the surgery on Castle Street in Conwy together with a QR code and also have some sponsor forms available with the reception staff. This is a direct link however to their special fundraising page:
