Well done to the Great Britain ladies W55 relay team who won the 4 x 100 metres final at the European Masters Athletics Championships in Madeira at the weekend with a stunning performance that is likely to be a new European record.

The GB team that collected prestigious gold medals consisted of Juliet Sidney, Diane Wright, Stefanie Dornbusch, and Christine Harrison-Bloomfield with an impressive time of 53.84, ahead of Germany in second place, and Ireland third.

Award winning veteran sprinter Juliet Sidney – fondly known as the ‘Pocket Rocket,’ who is also a proud member of Newport Harriers, has been battling with injury in the lead up these championships, with her starting place once in doubt.

However, speaking just after completing the team’s successful championship victory, she confirmed: “Great time yesterday with these ladies. I am proud to be part of a great team and breaking the British record that had stood since 2004 - and bagging a European record - all yet to be ratified at the European Masters Championships at Madeira.

“It’s been a tough week, but just getting to the start line was an achievement after tweaking my hamstring 7 weeks ago. Thanks to @elite82high for the fantastic aggressive rehab plan and training, and to Seary physio in the run up. It’s been a tough season, but worth every moment. That's a wrap, a week off, and then back to training.”

Juliet’s club, Newport Harriers, also paid tribute to their outstanding track star on Sunday and said: “A huge congratulations to Juliet Sidney who won yesterday in Madeira in the 4 x 100m relay breaking the British record that has stood for over twenty-years, along with a new European record too, with both still to be ratified.”
