Special sporting feature: Introduction by Don Hale.

This latest feature highlights the determination of a well-known local undertaker, businessman, and charity fundraiser Tristan Owen, who first began his running journey about 18 months ago, after taking part in the Conwy parkrun. Since then, the under-taker has fast become an over-taker, recording some excellent 5k times at parkrun, whilst gradually celebrating many other PBs at much longer distances.

Tristan is currently training hard for the Manchester Marathon on 27th April, and as member of the Llandudno Rotary Club, he is also fundraising for their Community Chest Fund, which offers a small grant fund available to all local clubs and charities.

This is Tristan Owen’s personal story about his various running exploits and his intentions to raise funds for such a worthy cause by competing in the forthcoming Manchester Marathon. (*He is shown below right at Conwy parkrun).

I first started running about 18 months ago, joining a few friends at Conwy Parkrun in November 2023. My first time was 32m 01s on a calm but cold winter morning. I've just ran my 40th Parkrun, and my current PB is 21:44, achieved in mid-February this year.

Since I started, I've made lots of great friends through parkrun, growing the group of us who attend together from two or three 18 months ago, to a group of ten plus friends, and most of us meet most weekends for parkrun and a coffee at the RSPB coffee shop afterwards.

The friendships and camaraderie I've gained through running is one of my favourite things about it. We all genuinely support each other, cheering each other on, celebrating PBs and other successes - we have a wide range of abilities, which doesn't matter in the slightest.

From parkrun, I was "encouraged" to sign-up to the Four Castles, the 4 half-marathon races, which I completed alongside my friends last year.

Despite my apprehension, I loved each one of them, managing 2 hours 5 minutes for the hilly Snowdonia half, and getting my current PB of 1 hour 47 minutes on the Bangor half.

Off the back of a successful Four Castles series, I took the plunge and signed up to the Manchester Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, 27th April 2025. I've always wanted to complete a marathon, and it now feels like the best time to try.

I chose Manchester for lots of reasons, as well as being fairly flat and hence a bit easier on the legs for my first marathon, and it's also the city where I met my wife, Kelly, whilst working there. Kelly, a modestly good runner, will not be joining me in the marathon, but she will be there to cheer me on - something she's always done despite thinking I'm a bit mad sometimes!

I will be raising money for Llandudno Rotary Club, specifically for their Community Chest fund, which is a small grant fund available to local clubs and charities, for up to £500. I am a member of the Rotary Club, and I know the value and impact the Community Chest grants have.

Last year, we had more applications than we could afford to ward to, I'm hoping to help with that this year!

Long term, I'm going to see how the marathon goes, but I have definite ambitions to break 20 minutes for my 5k time and want to keep up the social running."
