Proud moment for athletics coach John Hatton and a popular former community midwife Sharon Buckley.

It was a proud moment this weekend for athletics coach, MC and promoter, John Hatton as he saw his new running protegee Sharon Buckley – a well-known former North Wales midwife - cross the finish line at the challenging Conwy half-marathon with a remarkable time.

John, who is heavily involved with North Wales Road Runners, Conwy parkrun, and is also a keen supporter and promoter of a host of charity events, confirmed: “Over the last 6 months I have been training Sharon, who is 60, to run her first half-marathon which she did today in 2.34.17, which is a fantastic achievement.
“Sharon was a highly respected midwife in North Wales, and at one time she received an award as the top midwife in the Betsi Cadwalader Health Board for her dedicated service to the community.”


*John Hatton was on hand last Sunday morning to proudly see Sharon cross the finish line, close to Conwy Castle, on a cool, damp, and blustery morning, to welcome her back, after she recorded a superb time on her half-marathon debut, and to see her collect her finisher's medal.


*Sharon was thrilled after collecting her half-marathon finisher's medal on Conwy Quay.

Prestigious and historic award for services to the community.

John also highlighted another historic and prestigious award given to Sharon from Conwy Town Council, for her dedicated service which stated: ‘In 2015, Conwy Town Council initiated the Honorary Bailie title upon community members who have demonstrated exceptional service to their local community, in accordance with Edward I's 1284 Charter for Conwy.
‘Today, we proudly announce the investiture of Mrs Sharon Buckley with this esteemed recognition. Mrs Buckley, a dedicated healthcare professional, has devoted 39 years to serving as a Community Midwife and nurse. 
‘Her unwavering commitment and dedication have touched countless lives. Sharon's exceptional contributions extend beyond her career, encompassing charity events, support for hospices, and fostering unity within the community. She stands as a beacon of inspiration, embodying the essence of service.’

For a period of approximately eight weeks two areas of the promenade that will have semi permanent kiosks built on them have been cordened off with metal fencing. They are essentially at each end of the Cayley embankment, one near the slipway approximately 400 m from the start and the second approximately 1000m from the start. Special report by Don Hale. donhaleblog.blogspot.com/2025   Storm Amy forced the postponement of numerous parkruns throughout the UK last Saturday with North Wales events in particular badly affected by course flooding, heavy rain and gale force winds. Regular events at Newborough Forest, Nant y Pandy, Wepre, Penrhyn Castle, Conwy, Llangollen, Prestatyn, and Wrexham’s  Park in the Past parkruns  were all affected, with the Ruthin Memorial parkrun one of the few survivors. The Ruthin event on the Memorial Playing Fields, attracted 146 hardy runners including 74 visitors, with many travelling from far afield after searching hard to find a live parkrun, and despite the challenging conditions, ten people still recorded some very worthy personal best (PB) times. Report by Don Hale. donhaleblog.blogspot.com/2025   NWRRC endurance athlete Sarah Ferguson Hudson went solo on Sunday and competed in the Bromsberrow Speed Runway 10k, this time without her husband Ben, and thought it was going to be an easy and flattish type run…but how wrong was she! After her race she explained:  “Oh, my word. I should really read more carefully what I sign myself up to…   I thought it was a flat road race, and not 10k of hills, mud, fields, traps, and more. I was b ack in Gloucestershire where I grew up, and catching up with school friends.” *Despite all her challenges, Sarah (*pictured right) ran well and she finished 50th overall out of 159 entrants and the 16th female in 58.07.

Report by Don Hale. donhaleblog.blogspot.com/2025   It was wild, wet, and windy for over 1,000 athletes at the Anglesey 10k and half marathon events on St David’s Day, last Sunday morning, with the majority of entrants tackling the longer race distance over a challenging new course. In the 10k event which attracted 249 runners, this race was won by  Llyr Williams  in a very good time of 35 minutes and 10 seconds, and he was just 14-seconds ahead of rival  Shaun Hughes  in 35.24, and  Jack Hughes  in 35.40.     *Above left - Stuart and Joe  Culverhouse, with Gethin Wyn Jones, and Mike Hayton. *North Wales Road Runners  collected a number of prestigious age category honours and podium places.  Young Joe Culverhouse  led the team home in 29th place ...

Report by Don Hale .  Most photos by Michael Finnie. donhaleblog.blogspot.com/2025   The milder weather last Saturday morning and the fact that it was half-term attracted plenty of visiting athletes to the various parkruns around North Wales, with numerous personal best times recorded.  Visting athlete Ed Slaughter  (Porthcawl Runners) was the first finisher at the  Llandrillo yn Rhos  parkrun with a fast dash of just 16 minutes and 42 seconds, and he led home two other equally talented and fast rivals and course debutants in  Martin Sutherland  (Woking AC) in 17.05, and  Alex Compton  third in 17.46.
