My Love Affair with the Hills...: And 37-years of Mountain Rescue.

*(*Above): Scottish mountain rescue member and author George Bruce.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - George Bruce:

George's book combined with a unique television interview about his exciting life and work is to be featured shortly on BBC TV, as George explains:

I was interviewed by BBC recently for Simon Barnards programme Uncanny Interviews relating to my story of the Vanishing Cottage to be broadcast later this year so that should cause some interest in the Book.

I was born in Aberdeen and moved to Fort William for work, but, and due to working shifts, I had lots of spare time, and then discovered mountaineering via the local mountaineering and national clubs to enhance my climbing skills.

I found mountaineering to be a very worthwhile hobby which has lasted a lifetime and more. Made some very good friends and visited lots of fascinating places to date with many more still to visit and see.

The Mountain Rescue aspect became a very natural part of my mountaineering as it was simply a way of helping fellow mountaineers who had gotten into difficulties, or been injured, simply a way of paying back something into a hobby that I loved and still do.

The book was born from a scrap book that I kept via newspaper articles from various rescues and adventures that I became involved in, and I thought this could become a book of some interest to friends, family and people, who were interested in starting out on the hills.

*Pictured above - the rather wet start to the Conwy parkrun. Tough challenge for volunteers at North Wales parkruns. Report by Don Hale. Conwy photos by Michael (Pat) Finnie. donhaleblog.blogspot.com/2026 coastandcountry.blog   It was wild wet and very windy at the Llandrillo yn Rhos parkrun and at most other North Wales events last Saturday morning with entrants later praising the hard-working run directors, volunteers, and marshalls for turning out on such a challenging day. Once again, the visiting speed merchants ignored the conditions to record numerous top 5k finishing times, but  James Yarwood  (Wrexham AAC) and his sturdy twin-buggy claimed first place yet again with a fast finish in just 18 minutes and 5 seconds.  Quite remarkably, the first six finishers all dipped under 19 minutes with JM15-17 athlete  Joe Culverhouse  (NWRRC) taking the second spot with a determined effort, and he was only two seconds adrift of James, with  Sion Hill  ...

Newborough Forest won the virtual World Cup Parkrun Final against North Wales rivals

By Don Hale

Newborough Forest won the virtual World Cup Parkrun Final against North Wales rivals Archive report by Don Hale. Flashback story to earlier in 2020. The picturesque beauty spot of Newborough Forest on Anglesey finally won the epic local derby Parkrun battle over their North Wales rivals Conwy earlier in 2020 to win the top global tourism prize, with both teams recording a record number of votes. In a dramatic 24-hour final staged online, Newborough led for most of the way, and backed by tremendous Island support, fully deserved their victory. With this inaugural, virtual running competition, which attracted 24 teams worldwide from a variety of tourist locations based in Australia, Germany, Holland, Norway, and from all around the UK, it seemed quite bizarre, and perhaps a shade unfortunate that two teams situated just 30-miles apart in scenic North Wales, should meet in the final.                              ...

OLD MANCHESTER & THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

By Don Hale
Image
An old lady newspaper seller Old Manchester & the Industrial Revolution Report by Don Hale. Manchester, like so many other major cities throughout the country was completely transformed by the Industrial Revolution. It led to the rapid construction of canals, railways, housing, and scores of factories - many were built close to rivers and made extensive use of waterpower.   The city soon became a magnet for people seeking accommodation and work. And part of this labour force included many Irish immigrants, who started to arrive in great numbers from about 1852, followed by the Italians in1865, and numerous other foreign workers. The unprecedented growth of cotton mills and the increasing demand for additional labour continued to swell the population of Manchester.  In 1811, the regions census figures showed a population of 79,459; and by 1838 it had more t...
