In this very interesting memoir the author, Colin McIntyre, looks back on 34 years as a foreign correspondent mainly reporting the Cold War. 

After joining Reuters news agency in the 1960s he is posted to East Berlin, the only Western correspondent accredited to communist East Germany, and Czechoslovakia, still reeling from a 1968 Soviet-led invasion to crush attempted reforms. 

After a spell in Asia covering communist takeovers in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, he returns to East Europe to report from Soviet bloc countries chafing under Moscow’s hard-line control. 

He then worked in Ireland covering the troubles in the British-ruled North and moves in the south to challenge the powerful Catholic Church, it is then back to Eastern Europe with a new wind of change blowing from Moscow to chart the collapse of communism in the region after four decades, including the bloody break-up of Yugoslavia.
