Praise was given to top all-round athlete, Arwel Lewis, from Eryri Harriers last week after he was presented with the ‘Services to Athletics’ award at the Welsh Athletics awards evening.

This popular veteran still competes regularly for his club in all disciplines, and has represented Wales on the road, cross country, trail, and in mountain races. 


Kay Hatton, who is a member of the North Wales Regional Athletics Council, said: “Arwel puts in a huge amount of time as a volunteer for his club, and as a race adjudicator and race organiser. 


“He is also the fell/trail representative on the NWRAC and WA General Council, the Welsh Athletics mountain/trail secretary, and a team manager, in addition to be being the Welsh Ultra representative. This was such a well-deserved award!”


A modest Arwel later acknowledged: “I am very honoured and feel very privileged to have received the Welsh Athletics Services to Athletics award. Being a staunch supporter of Welsh Athletics and all aspects of the sport. 


“It is a sport for all, and I am more than willing to give up my spare time to ensure everyone has a great and enjoyable experience in the sport. I am extremely grateful to everyone who have helped me over the years and very appreciative of the many other volunteers who do so much for the sport.”

Dark Peak’s  Euan Patton , not content with having the cheek by taking 39 seconds off my 34-year record of 8 minutes in 2023, he went a massive step again, by taking a further 35 seconds off his own record finishing in an unbelievable 6.46. Talented veterans’ Martin Green  (Meirionnydd RC) and  Steve Gardner  (NWRRC) celebrated good performances, with Martin finishing second in his MV50 age cat in 9.49, whilst Steve won his MV60 cat in 10.10. It was a proud moment this weekend for athletics coach, MC and promoter, John Hatton as he saw his new running protegee  Sharon Buckley – a well-known former North Wales midwife - cross the finish line at the challenging Conwy half-marathon with a remarkable time. John, who is heavily involved with North Wales Road Runners , Conwy parkrun , and is also a keen supporter and promoter of a host of charity events, confirmed: “Over the last 6 months I have been training Sharon, who is 60, to run her first half-marathon which she did today in 2.34.17, which is a fantastic achievement. “Sharon was a highly respected midwife in North Wales, and at one time she received an award as the top midwife in the Betsi Cadwalader Health Board for her dedicated service to the community.” *John Hatton was on hand last ...

Manchester, like so many other major cities throughout the country was completely transformed by the Industrial Revolution. It led to the rapid construction of canals, railways, housing, and scores of factories - many were built close to rivers and made extensive use of waterpower.   The city soon became a magnet for people seeking accommodation and work. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com   Twenty-four members of NWRRC took part in the annual Christmas club handicap race, which this year was staged from the Rhos on Sea clock tower to the renovated far end of the promenade and back over a 4.5-mile course. Well organised with times recorded and verified by  Carla Green  and  Elizabeth Driscoll , with support from other members, the handicap rules this time included each runner having to hand in their watches and mobile phones, and the need to predict their finishing times, so that no one knew their exact pace, or whether their estimated times were likely to be accurate, until they actually reached the finish line.
