The ‘Old Boys’ led the way in the third of this year’s Master Internationals which was held within the AJ Bell Great North 10km in Newcastle.

Not satisfied with breaking the Welsh and British records at the Swansea Half Marathon last month, Alan Davies, Swansea Harriers once again emphatically won his M70 category by nearly two minutes and he ran the undulating Newcastle course in 38-34! That’s two wins out of two events for Alan this year and both by two minutes underlining he is world class.

Alan Davies being presented with his winning trophy from Welsh Team Manager Luke Northall

Not to be outdone, Mike Whyatt, Eryri Harriers also won his second Masters International out of two (having previously won the 5km in Shrewsbury by over a minute) when he won his M60 category by 73 seconds.

*Mike Whyatt (*above) on his way to another emphatic win.

Alan and Mike were our only winners on the day but there were many good performances with Tom Roberts, Meirionnydd RC, whilst not back to his best after illness, still managed to lead the Welsh contingent homw with an excellent third place in the M35 category in exactly 32-00.

In the M50 age group, Martin Green, Meirionnydd RC was given third place because we were using gun times for the race results and not chip timing and Martin’s 34-49 got him finishing just in front of Steve Davies,  Parc Bryn Bach, who actually ran quicker with his chip time being 5 seconds quicker than Martin’s (Steve 34-41 to Martin’s 34-46). However as they were both Welshmen it was settled amicably!

*Angela Deeley receiving her trophy from Olympian Keri Lees who was the England Team Manager

Our only medallist amongst the women was once again Angela Deeley, Deestriders who picked up her second medal from three races. Second in the 5km at Shrewsbury, and fifth in the half marathon at Swansea, Angela had another great run to show her versatility as she finished second again in her W55 age group.

Full results are detailed below. There are three more Master Internationals to go this year: The Trail Half Marathon, Forest of Dean is being held on 28th September (teams will be selected on 13 August so there is still time to express an interest – https://forms.office.com/e/W58kh7BbWW).

The Masters  Marathon International is being held within the Abingdon Marathon on 19th October and teams have already been selected. The final Masters International of the season will be the traditional BMAF Masters Cross Country International which is being held at Roundhey Park Leeds on 15th November. Details and the opportunity to express an interest will be out shortly.
