CCRC: Twelfth Man’s Conviction Involving Corrupt Police Officer Referred to CoA

A man’s conviction, which was based on the evidence of a corrupt police officer, has been referred to the Court of Appeal by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).   Errol Campbell was convicted in April 1977 of theft and conspiracy to steal from a goods depot in South London. The case against him was led by the discredited British Transport Police officer DS Derek Ridgewell.  The CCRC has now referred to the appeal courts 12 people’s convictions where the evidence of DS Ridgewell was central to the prosecution case.

DS Ridgewell led the case against Mr Campbell and several others, but along with colleagues DC Douglas Ellis and DC Alan Keeling, later pleaded guilty to stealing from the same goods depot.   The CCRC referred the convictions of Mr Campbell’s co-defendants, Saliah Mehmet and Basil Peterkin in August 2023 after the CCRC tracked down their family members. The convictions were both quashed in January 2024.  Mr Campbell appealed his conviction in 1978, but the conviction was upheld. Mr Campbell died in October 2004.

As Mr Campbell is deceased an application was submitted to the CCRC in September 2024 by one of Mr Campbell’s family members, with the assistance of the charity APPEAL.  The CCRC has now determined that there is a real possibility that, like the convictions of 11 other people that have been referred to the court, Mr Campbell’s conviction will be quashed.  Anyone else who believes they might be a victim of a miscarriage of justice, convicted in a case involving Derek Ridgewell, is urged to contact the CCRC.

Shooting of IRA Men to be Referred to Prosecution Service

A coroner who ruled SAS soldiers were unjustified when they opened fire killing four IRA men in an ambush at Clonoe, in County Tyrone, is to refer his findings to Northern Ireland's Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Kevin Barry O'Donnell, 21, Sean O'Farrell, 22, Peter Clancy, 21, and Patrick Vincent, 20, died in February 1992, minutes after they had carried out a gun attack on Coalisland police station. The soldiers opened fire as the men arrived at St Patrick's Church car park in a hijacked lorry which had a heavy machine gun welded to its tailgate. Security forces had intelligence the car park would be used and 12 soldiers were in position behind a hedgerow.

One in Four Working Age People in the UK Have Some Form of Criminal Record

Many have only had minor interactions with the criminal justice system. But their criminal record continues to impact job opportunities, volunteering roles, housing rights and even travel – sometimes forever. People shouldn’t have to pay for the same crime over and over again. We need a full review of the unfair, outdated criminal records disclosure system, so that people can move on and contribute their skills to society. Our three key asks for a fairer system are: 1) No automatic disclosure of cautions 2) Wipe the slate clean for childhood offences  3) Stop forcing people to reveal short prison sentences forever

Criminal Records Disclosure. The first step towards reforming the criminal records system is making sure MPs understand the problem. We have a crucial opportunity now - but we need your help! We’d like you to invite your MP to attend an event. On the 26th March in the House of Lords, we’re bringing MPs and peers together for an important event about criminal records disclosure. We’ll be discussing the harm the current system does to individuals and to the economy and what can be done to improve the system. This event is a rare opportunity for decision-makers to hear directly from campaigners, employers, and people with lived experience of the system. By attending, they can better understand why reform is needed - and what they can do about it. But none of this matters if MPs don’t attend - so, together, let’s make sure they do.

Bloody Sunday Murder Accused Soldier F to Stand Trial in September

A judge has indicated that a former paratrooper charged with two murders and five attempted murders on Bloody Sunday will stand trial in September. The former serviceman, known as Soldier F, is accused of - and denies - the murders of James Wray and William McKinney. They were among 13 people who were shot dead by the Army at a civil rights demonstration in Londonderry in 1972. Soldier F is also charged with five counts of attempted murder.

At a short hearing at Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday 18th February, prosecution and defence lawyers said they expected to be ready to start the trial in September. The judge said he would list the trial to begin during that month, with an exact date to be decided at a future hearing. The case will come before the court again for a review in four weeks' time.

Six New York Prison Workers Indicted For Murder in Beating Death of Inmate

Six New York prison workers have been indicted for second-degree murder in the beating death of an incarcerated man who had been handcuffed, while four others were charged with lesser crimes. The beating of Robert Brooks by multiple officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in December was caught on body cameras, triggering widespread outrage and calls for justice. Some of the corrections officers appeared in a Utica court in handcuffs while a judge heard pleas and considered bond. The special prosecutor, Onondaga county district attorney William Fitzpatrick, began to detail the charges in court Thursday afternoon.
