Stop the Cancellation of Running Events in Wrexham - and please sign the petition...

Important introduction by Don Hale: 5/9/2025. donhaleblog.blogspot.com/2025

*My thanks to my running colleague Martin Green who has alerted me to an extraordinary decision made by Wrexham County Council Borough Council, to try to cancel running events on Wrexham Industrial Estate, and in the Isycoed area, which will affect many events including the famous Helena Tipping 10k race, which helps to raise tens of thousands of pounds for worthwhile charities.

Martin said: “Would appreciate if any of my running friends could sign this petition, as some council official is trying to ruin a race that’s been going longer than me.”

And Mike Edwards, a retired chartered surveyor and local government officer, runner, cyclist and swimmer, has just organised a special petition, which explains why it is so important to continue with this race: He confirmed: "My Sincere thanks to everyone who has signed the petition and circulated it to running friends and families.

Stop the Cancellation of Running Events in Wrexham.

Special online appeal by Mike Edwards: THE ISSUE:

For thirty-three years, the Helena Tipping 10k has been a cornerstone of our community in Wrexham, UK. Named in honour of Helena who tragically succumbed to Motor Neurone Disease at the age of 50, this event is not only a race but a tribute to her legacy.

Helena’s husband, John, now in his mid-80s, continues to participate, showcasing the enduring spirit of our community and the strong ties of friendship fostered through Wrexham Amateur Athletic Club.

The recent decision by Wrexham County Borough Council to cancel running events on Wrexham Industrial Estate and in the Isycoed Area is a devastating blow, not just to those who hold fond memories of Helena, but to all residents who cherish this celebration of life, health and wellbeing and resilience, and community spirit.

These events encourage healthy lifestyles, foster community cohesion, and draw in participants and spectators from across the UK and abroad. They are an integral part of our local culture and economy, providing support to local businesses and charities.

The council's decision feels short-sighted, neglecting the historical significance and community benefits these events bring. It fails to recognize the emotional and economic contribution of athletic events and the importance of preserving traditions that bond our community.

We strongly suggest that the council reconsider this decision and engage with local organizers and community members to find viable solutions that can address any concerns while keeping these events alive. Measures such as revising route logistics, enhancing event planning, or increasing volunteer support can ensure these events continue safely and successfully.

Join us in urging Wrexham County Borough Council to reverse their decision and preserve the legacy of the Helena Tipping 10k and other significant events on the Wrexham Industrial Estate and Isycoed Area. Sign this petition to stand with John, Wrexham Amateur Athletic Club, and our entire community in keeping this cherished tradition alive.
