At the end of this month, the Rhos on Sea 5K Your Way, Move Against Cancer group will celebrate its first anniversary. They have had a highly successful year after being initially based at Conwy before opting to move to nearby Rhos earlier this year due to public demand.

They are due meet up again this Saturday (*27th September), which will be their first birthday bash, and a delighted Richard Peevor, who is the Lead Ambassador for the Rhos group confirmed:

“Our group has gone from strength to strength, with over thirty people attending our events on the last Saturday of every month. We will be meeting at 08.45am in Rhos, ready for a 9am start.

“We welcome people living with, or beyond cancer, family and friends, and including healthcare professionals, and those who have lost someone to cancer to come and walk, jog, or run with us.”

He emphasised, however: “People are welcome to do as much or as little of the 5K as they wish. And if they don’t feel up to walking, or running, they are still welcome to join us for our social gathering at the Social Cafe in Rhos from about 10am. The group has a great feel-good-feel to it, and participants like the exercise and the social catch up afterwards.”

Richard also explained how and why the Rhos on Sea group was founded at this time last year and stated: “All the 5KYW groups are attached to parkruns. Other groups within North Wales are at Prestatyn, Erddig, and Nant y Pandy. I took ours away from Conwy parkrun to keep it going during the pause due to renovation work on part of the course, and our participants really liked Rhos, hence my driver for a Rhos parkrun!

“Sadly, it’s a 6.9km round trip from Tesco to do the Conwy parkrun now, and many of my group can't walk that far, or don't wish to, (and that distance doesn't include going to the cafe either).

“I am really keen to get our group back and linked to a parkrun as many people want to do it more regularly, and the idea would be for them to come every week to parkwalk/parkrun and then have our branded meet up once a month. Obviously, one meet-up a month doesn't get the fitness increased so I want it to become part of people's lives.”

*Everyone is welcome to join in with the Rhos on Sea 5k Your Way, Move Against Cancer group.

The main aims of the 5k Your Way, Move Against Cancer project are as follows:

*To encourage participation in physical activity.

*To offer each other support and build friendships.

*To improve attendees’ physical and mental wellbeing.

*To improve confidence and self-esteem.

*To promote skills development, especially through volunteering.

*To encourage participation in local parkruns and other physical activity.

*To reduce social isolation and connect with existing community groups.

*To encourage health care professionals to signpost patients and carers to parkrun as a way of improving health and wellbeing.

*To encourage physical activity for those working in cancer care.
