Fan’s stories required – Going to the Match!

Introduction by Don Hale.

https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com

I was most fortunate to have spent several years working with and playing as a promising young footballer with Bury FC as youngster from the age of about thirteen to my late teens.

I enjoyed every minute playing for the juniors, youth team and reserves, with some mainstream game time and friendlies against top clubs thrown in.

It was a memorable time in my life and a great club and when I was injured, I recall Les Hart being a tower of strength during my rehab. A really good atmosphere and an interesting time in the club's yo-yo years, playing with some fascinating characters.

Memories are so precious and I have just found a nostalgic team photo from the 1968/69 season. I am shown third from the left on the front row.

This is the caption on the back of the photo: Pictured above top - (Back row l-r) Dave Lyons, George Jones, Hugh Tinney, Neil Ramsbottom, Keith Eccleshare, and Alec Rae; (Middle row l-r) Brian Turner, Greg Farrell, Paul Hince, Alf Arrowsmith, Roy Hughes, Roy Parnell, Brian Grundy, Ben Anderson, Jimmy Kerr, Ray Parry; (Front row l-r), some of the young apprentices that I can recall, including Terry McDermott, David Holt, Don Hale, Law, Ball, and 3rd from the right Charlie Gisbourne.

*More fascinating memories of my time at Bury FC and details of some extraordinary behind the scenes incidents are contained in a chapter or two within my updated book first published in 1986 and recently revamped in August 2024:

Running for Fun - some amusing tales about the author's marathon days and playing for Bury FC...

Fan’s stories required – Going to the Match!

The team at Bury Art Museum are now asking for Bury FC fans to put pen to paper and write down your personal stories of why you support the Shakers.

How did you come to support the club?  Did your parents / grandparents support Bury? What was your first ever match?  What are your best memories of supporting the Shakers?  What does the club mean to you and your family?

These memories and stories will be included in a booklet which will be available for everyone to read at an exhibition “Going to The Match” which will be held at the Art Museum from 4th October 2024 through to 1st March 2025.

If you would like to take part, please email your stories (no longer than 350 words) in Word format before the deadline of 26th August to artgallery@bury.gov.uk

The focal point of the exhibition will be LS Lowry’s masterpiece ‘Going to the Match’, the 1953 painting which depicts fans arriving for a Bolton Wanderers game at Burnden Park.

The exhibition will focus on football fans and will include iconic photographs of football fans from various north-west clubs, including Bury, Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool, Oldham and Bolton.  There will also be various interesting Bury FC historical and fan-related items on display at the exhibition.
