North Wales Road Runners (NWRRC) celebrated an exciting midweek 5k race at Llanrug last Wednesday night with eleven podium places in the NW championships, and collected four gold medals, four silver, and three bronze, with some fast times recorded!

A high-quality field of top club runners pushed the pace throughout and the event winner was Tom Roberts(Meirionnydd RC), who set a new 5k championship record in just 15 minutes and 25 seconds. In 2nd place was Dion Griffiths (Cardiff AC), in 15.42, with Connor Rogers (Wrexham AAC) in hot pursuit in 3rd, and he was only 3-seconds adrift in 15.45. *Martin Green (NWRRC), pictured right, finished well in 4th place.

The ladies race was won by Samia Jones (Liverpool Harriers) in 18.46, with Rachel Shipley (Abergele Harriers), 2nd in 19.00, and Elliw Haf Roberts (Eryri), 3rd in 19.46. There were 217 finishers.

Paul Brooks from North Wales Regional Athletics Council (NWRAC), later confirmed: “Tom Robert’s time was a new NWRAC North Wales 5km championship best, taking 4 seconds off David Mountford's 15:25 set back in 2010 in Rhyl. Thanks to TDL Event Services for their excellent help and to the event organisers for a great race.”


The main race awards were based on 10-year age categories, whilst the NW 5k championships included 5-year age group reviews. These are the NW championship medal results: *GOLD: M45 Martin Green, M60 Steve Gardner, F50 Carla Green, and Karen Butler F60. *SILVER: M45 Jonathan Kettle, M70 Rob Fryer, F50 Hannah Griffith, F55Cheryl Frost. BRONZE: M40 Will Evans, M50 Stuart Culverhouse, and F60 Kay Hatton.

NWRRC members Martin Green and Jonathan Kettle both had excellent runs, and finished in the top-ten. Martin was 4th overall in 16.41, and he also won his M40-49 age cat, with Jonathan 10th, and he was 3rd in the same age cat as Martin in 17.28.
Steve Gardner continued his recent track form to win his M60-69 cat in 33rd place in 19.14, and Steve Mason enjoyed a good run, and finished 40th in 19.47, whilst Will Evans ensured the club recorded five very fast finishers, who all dipped under the magic 20-minute mark, following a positive pack performance in 19.54.
Some other members worthy of note included: Carla Green, who was the 6th female, and she also won her F55-59 cat in 20.33, Cheryl Frost 3rd F50-59 in 23.46; Kay Hatton 3rd in her F60-69 cat in 24.01, newcomer Molly Evans winning her FU20 cat in 25.27, and master veteran Rob Fryer, who enjoyed further success after finishing 2nd in his new F70-79 cat in 26.30.

Steve ran in both the 200m and 400m events, whilst Dave set a new PB in the veteran’s shot-put competition. After the events, Steve confirmed:  “Just a note to let you know that my dad and I competed in the Menai evening events, with dad achieving a new shot put PB, and I was very pleased with my 200m and 400m performances. “ Dad won 1st place in the shot-put in his MV80 age cat, with a throw of 7.09 to set a new PB record, and I completed the 200m in 29.05, and was 2nd MV60 cat, and I finished 1st MV60 cat in the 400m in 1.03.63.”   Other race results: RACE 4 LI

Bright, beautiful and fast at Conwy parkrun despite the Friday night Dash.

Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com   There were a good few tired legs at Conwy parkrun last Saturday morning following the participation of many athletes in the previous evening’s 5-mile charity event at Rohan’s Run formerly known as the Deganwy Dash. Despite this slight handicap, this week’s parkrun was backed by beautifully warm and sunny weather conditions, and still attracted over 300 mixed ability entrants from all over the UK. North Wales Road runners claimed five age cat victories from thirteen members, and  Martin Green  claimed the top spot overall as the first male finisher.  Martin also won his VM45 age cat with an outstanding run in just 17 minutes and 19 seconds, whilst his talented wife  Carla Green , also hit good form as the second club finisher, in 10th place overall, and she was the 3rd female in 20.34, to add

New Welsh Masters PB and record for David Gibson at Swansea half-marathon Two weeks after setting a Welsh M70 Half Marathon record in the Wales Masters v England HM match in Manchester, Welsh Master David Gibson , aged 72, of Tri Hard Harriers ran the Swansea Half Marathon on Sunday with a new PB of 87 minutes and 11 seconds, and setting a new Welsh M70 Half Marathon record (subject to official confirmation).  In addition, it is likely that this is the fastest UK M70 Half Marathon time this year-to-date.   At this event last year, David nearly collapsed at the finish owing to the after effects of Covid, so this year’s result is particularly pleasing.   *Two talented Welsh Masters and record holders (*above left), David Gibson, and (*above right), Dave Gardner from NWRRC, who set a new shot put record. Report on the Welsh Masters half-marathon International v England at the Great Manchester race.

Masters Half Marathon International England v Wales Great Manchester Half Marathon Sunday 26th May 2024.   Report and photos  courtesy  of the Welsh Masters team manager Bernie Jones. The second of this year’s Masters Road Internationals was held within the Great Manchester Run Half Marathon and a small team (once again compared to England’s huge team) turned up in Manchester City Centre and achieved the best results we have so far in any of the Master internationals that we have held in the past three years.  This time the Team competition was in 10 year age groups with Wales having teams of 6 from ages 35 through to 65+. Report by Don Hale https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   Over two-hundred entrants at Conwy parkrun faced a mixed bag of weather last Saturday morning with cool, wet, and windy conditions, which made a mockery of the claim that it’s supposedly summer! North Wales Road Runners  Stuart Culverhouse  and his young son  Joe   Culverhouse , however, celebrated a family double with both members winning their respective age categories. Stuart, who led home a team of eleven, was the 1st NWRRC man home in 12th place overall in 20.54, and he won his VM50 cat, whilst Joe finished 28th, and won his JM11 cat in 22.34. Bryn, who represents Colwyn Bay AAC, easily won his SM20 age cat with a fast time of 17 minutes and 43 seconds, with fell runner  Josh Keogh  winning his SM30 age cat in 2nd place overall in 18.02, whilst  Aled Hughes  (GOG Triathlon) finished 3rd in 18.15, and he won his VM35 cat. Gwen eventually completed her trek in a highly credible time of 7 hours 50 minutes and 58 seconds to finish in 158th place overall, and she was the 71st female athlete.  She later confirmed: “This must be one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.
