Nearly three-hundred club and mixed ability athletes took part in the popular annual Race the Highland Train 5k dash last Wednesday night at Caernarfon.
Departing from the Highland railway station in town, 278 runners, then travelled by train to the next station along the line at Dinas, before returning on foot to take on the challenge of trying to beat the train back to its start, along a mainly downhill and very fast course.
A trio of runners from Meirionnydd RC claimed the first three finishing places with some excellent times including Owen Roberts,the first man home in just 14 minutes and 13 seconds, with Gavin Stuart second in 14.38, and Ben Harding third in 15.30.
Hannah Thomas (Maldwyn Harriers) was the first female finisher in 17.56, and she was chased all the way by Llio Jones (Cybi Striders) in 18.14, and young Tamsin Seguin (Menai T&F) in18.37.
*The male senior veterans’ prizes were keenly contested with the following age category winners: M60 Gareth Southworth(Cybi Striders) 67th in 20.06; M65 Arwel Lewis (Eryri Harriers) 104th in 22.03; M70 Clive Wycherley (Menai RR) 138th in 23.38; M75 Robert Neale (St Asaph) 240th in 30.03; M80 super-vet Dennis Smith 269th in 34.46; and fellow super-vet extraordinaire Roger Harrison Jones (Prestatyn RC) 262nd in 33.38.
*North Wales Road Runners entered five members with Jonathan Kettle leading the team home in 16th place in 17.17, and he was second in his M50 age cat. Daniel Hennell also enjoyed another good run in 21.53 in 102nd place, with Hannah Griffith 155th in 24.20, and Nia Lister finished well in 24.25 in 160th place, whilst Helen Hannam was chuffed with her time of 27.13 in 212th place. \
*A couple of other runners of note included: Michael Corrales (Goat RC) in7th place, and Aled Hughes (GOG Triathlon) 8th in 16.17.
