It was a bright sunny day with a bracing and very cool wind for a record number of colourful costume wearing swimmers and dippers on Llandudno Promenade on Boxing Day morning, who then braved the freezing sea temperatures to help raise thousands of pounds for local and other deserving charities.

MC Ian Turner kept the packed crowds well informed throughout the morning as usual, by updating everyone about this exciting event, which attracted many hundreds of people from miles around just to watch the mad dash into the waters.

It also turned out to be yet another grand occasion that had been sadly missed over the past two years due to Covid-19 restrictions, but this year it certainly returned with a major splash!

Ian, who is well-known as an experienced entertainer, charity fundraiser, and popular MC at a host of varied events has been involved with the Boxing Day celebrations for over four decades and he confirmed the success of this latest dip, saying: “There were huge crowd at today’s Lions Club of Llandudno Boxing Day Sea Dip, and a record number of swimmers too.

“The weather was with us, and a great time was had by all. To everyone who, in whatever way, supported today’s event, thank you.

“The two charities chosen by the Lions Club of Llandudno to benefit from this years’ Boxing Day Dip are Ty GobaithHope House, and Tenovus.

“Many other charities and good causes also benefitted, such as Llandudno Football Club, who are trying to raise around £250,000 for a new pitch, and the club’s supporters turned out to help raise the vital money needed.

“In addition, Macmillan Cancer SupportWales Air Ambulance, and Blind Veterans UK, will also benefit by the magnificent actions of the Llandudno Vikings, whilst Shine will also benefit from the efforts of Mrs Val Conway, who today took part in the Boxing Day Dip for the 29th time, so well-done Val!”

Ian also identified the regular appearance of an enormous camel costume but remained puzzled as to who the occupants might be, and then watched with glee as it joined numerous other runners who were all wearing similar crazy fancy dress or festive outfits, as they sprinted across the beach into the sea.

Llandudno RNLI were on stand-by just off-shore in case of any potential mishaps and the event was well marshalled with plenty of other safety measures in place and additional support.

Ian added: “Llandudno's very own Miss Alice (Thea) also took to the water. She hoped to raise £250 for the Llandudno RNLI, but she smashed her target by raising a wonderful £350, which was fantastic. Well done Miss Alice! There were many other charities who will benefit from our Boxing Day event too – and where there's a need, there's a Lion!”
