Wild, wet, and windy at popular Conwy Parkrun...and success for Charlie Owen.

It was another wild, wet, and very windy day at Conwy parkrun last Saturday morning at the RSPB site, yet this popular event still attracted over two hundred determined runners.

Martin Green was the first man home again over this puddled-filled course and knocked eighteen seconds off his winning time from last week, but he was made to work hard throughout his run by promising local junior athlete Alfie Shiland, who eventually finished just seven seconds adrift.

North Wales Road Runners had twelve members in action and recorded nine age cat podium results including five outright victories, two second, and three third places.

Martin Green additionally won his MV45-49 age cat in a fast time of 18 minutes 48 seconds, whilst Steve Mason also enjoyed another great performance to finish 5th overall in 19.41 and claimed 3rd spot in the same cat as Martin.

*Martin and Carla Green were both back on form at last weekend's parkrun.

Stuart Culverhouse continued his fine form in 12th place and won his MV50-54 cat in 20.40, with Dave Spofforth2nd in his MV40-44 cat and 14th overall in 20.59. Steve Roberts won his MV55-59 age cat in 25th place in 21.50, and it was good to see Carla Green heading back to fitness again after injury to win her VW50-54 age cat in 27th place in 22.00.

Youngster Joe Culverhouse finished in 51st place overall and he was 4th in his JM11-14 cat in 23.48, whilst veteran athlete Kay Hatton celebrated another excellent run to win her VW55.59 cat finishing in 53rd place in 23.56, recording her best Conwy parkrun time since May 2019.

Master vet Don Hale was 2nd in his MV65-69 age cat in 25.12 in 70th place, and Sue Smith ran well despite the conditions in 117th place and finished 4th in her VW55.59 cat in 29.27. 

Meanwhile, Helen Hannam (*pictured above) completed Saturday’s parkrun as part of her marathon training plan and claimed 3rd spot in her VW45-49 cat in 30.16, finishing in 124th place overall, whilst Rachel Morris was another long-distance trainee, finishing 152nd in 32.51.

*The first three placings included: 1st Martin Green MV45-49 in 18.48, 2nd Alfie Shilland JM11-14 in 18.55, and 3rd Paul Jones (Eryri Harriers) MV45-49 in 19.30. Six runners dipped under the twenty-minute barrier and the event attracted 201 finishers.

Athletes on the run…

Hat-trick for Elizabeth at Falkland Islands parkrun.

*Elizabeth Driscoll (*pictured above) recorded an impressive hat-trick of 1st Lady win at the Cape Pembroke Lighthouse parkrun on the Falkland Islands last Saturday. The NWRRC athlete finished 7th overall in a time of 25.26 to claim her third victory in recent weeks despite blustery conditions. After the event, the Flight Control officer from RAF Valley, who is currently out there on secondment, said: ‘Sneaked off work for parkrun again yesterday - managed to regain 1st lady status. If you thought you had a windy one, it had nothing on this!’ 

 

Success for trio at Winter Warmer races in Manchester.

*Three NWRRC members took part in a couple of Winter Warmer races in Heaton Park, Manchester, last Sunday, with local soccer referee Charlie Owen netting a great result to win his MV60-65 age category, finishing 21st overall in a time of 36.32.

They all had to tackle some challenging conditions that included heavy rain, strong winds, mud, hills and a multi-lapped course, yet Kelly-Marie Alford and Cai Roberts still had reasons to celebrate during a quick return to Heaton Park for the second week in succession for another half-marathon event, where they knocked several minutes off their previous times to finish in 1.58.47.

*Cai Roberts, Kelly Alford and Charlie Owen all ran well despite the weather at the Winter Warmer races at Heaton Park, Manchester, last Sunday.

 

Prestigious Welsh Athletics award for Roger Harrison Jones.

 

Master veteran athlete Roger Harrison Jones from Prestatyn RC, received a special and much deserved “Meritorious Award” from Welsh Athletics officials last Saturday at Oswestry following the latest North Wales cross country league fixture.

The highly respected and experienced runner finished as the 22nd male in the four-mile plus mixed event for women and male runners aged 65 and over, and he also won his MV80 age category in 35 minutes 29 seconds.

Roger was later handed his prestigious award by Bernie Jones, from the NW cross country league, to commemorate more than sixty-years of dedicated service to the sport. 

At the event, Bernie confirmed: ‘Well done to Roger Harrison Jones on receipt of his Meritorious Award. He really is a true inspiration for us all, and to have the winner of the first ever North Wales Cross Country League race back in 1958 still running and enjoying our great sport is both unbelievable and inspiring. Well done Roger and well deserved.’

NICK BEER 10K.

The Nick Beer 10k will be staged this Sunday in Llandudno from 12-noon with over 600 runners tackling a challenging course from the promenade by Venue Cymru and around the Great Orme before returning to the start. This year marks the 30^th anniversary, and the event will also include a family Fun-Run for St David’s Hospice prior to the main race at 11.30am.
