Five age cat wins for Road Runners at Conwy parkrun.

Numbers were down for regulars at Conwy parkrun last Saturday due to the rough weather and several fixture clashes, yet this popular 5k run still attracted tourists from as far afield as Davenport, Rochdale, Stockport, Lancaster, Newbury, and Pontypridd, amongst others.

North Wales Road Runners entered seven athletes this week and five claimed age category wins, with two others finishing in third places. And both the male and female first finishers positions were won by Martin and Carla Green.

The wet and very blustery conditions, however, didn’t seem to affect Martin Green who was the first runner back again to record a hat-trick of successive victories, and he also won his MV45-49 age cat in 18 minutes 56 seconds. 



*Dave Spofforth on form again and he won his age cat at Conwy.


David Spofforth ran very well to finish in 4th place, and he was 1st in his MV40-44 cat in 21.15, with Carla Greenfinishing 7th overall, and the 1st female runner, easily winning her VW50-54 age cat in 21.39; and Jamie Tharme continued to impress finishing 12th and 3rd MV40-45 cat in 22.49.

Joe Culverhouse and his dad Stuart ran together and finished in 18th and 19th places respectively, with Joe winning his JM11-14 cat and Stuart 3rd in his MV50-54 cat in 23.18, whilst master vet Don Hale won his M65-69 age cat in 25.34, finishing in 37th place overall.

*The challenging conditions though kept the finishing times well down with just two runners dipping under the twenty-minute mark, and the first three runners home included: 1st Martin Green (NWRRC), 1st MV45-49 in 18.56; 2nd Andy Savage (Cybi Striders), 1st MV50-54 in 19.26; and 3rd James Williams (Lymm Runners), 2nd MV50-54 in 20.34. There were 120 finishers.

Response to Conwy Parkrun's potentially controversial statement about the latest behind the scenes activities... Statement from Conwy Parkrun about work behind the scenes

Dear Conwy parkrun community, We wanted to update you on the work going on behind the scenes to get Conwy parkrun back up and running.  It has been fantastic to see, from our Facebook page, the Conwy parkrun community enjoying their Saturday mornings at other parkruns, far and wide – but it would be even better to have everyone back in Conwy. We wanted to take this opportunity to update you on the progress we are making. As you know, the work on the path between the RSPB nature reserve and the railway bridge forced us to pause our parkrun while the path was resurfaced. It’s great to see that this work has been completed on time, and it does look fantastic. Unfortunately, at the same time that this work began, we were made aware of concerns from parkrun HQ regarding the adequacy and safety of our car parking. Another record smashed at Penrhyn Castle parkrun and four age cat wins at Bala...

This well organised event was also run in conjunction with the  North Wales Regional 5k championships  and overall it attracted over two-hundred elite, club, and varied ability runners from across the area and beyond. Carla Green  from NWRRC ran well in the Swansea half marathon on Sunday and she was 521st out of 5,729 entrants. She was the 94th female finisher in a chip time of 1.31.42, and her club colleague  Kevin Higgins  travelled to  Port Sunlight  on the same day to compete in two races and explained: “ Double header this morning in  Port Sunlight races . First a 5k and then a 10k straight after it. Two great races. Great course and an extra medal for completing in both races. Report by Don Hale.  https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com   Penrhyn Castle parkrun attracted 317 entrants last Saturday including visiting athlete Sara Ismail-Sutton (Durham City Harriers), who was not only the 1st finisher overall, but she also smashed the female course record on her debut in 17.45. Despite the cool and blustery conditions Sara beat all her male rivals with ease, and was eventually followed by  Aidan Thomas  in 18.30, and VM60 veteran  Graham Bale  (Plymstock RR), who gave Aidan a hard chase in 3rd spot in 18.33. Quite remarkably, the first three female finishers were all debutants, and with Sara taking the top-spot overall, the 2nd female place was taken by  Anna Patrickson  (City of Salisbury), in 21.56, with  Patricia Ronksley ( Stragglers), 3rd in 23.09....
