Great medal showing by Welsh Masters Athletics men at the British Championships at Moorways, Derby.

Welsh Masters Athletics men’s team collected 21 prestigious age category medals at the British Masters T&F championships at Derby in August, including 6 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze!

Many of the medals were won by multi-event participants with Graham Holder claiming two gold medals for his success in the HT6K, and WT1134K events, and a silver in the DT 1.5K, whilst Ian Broadhurst won gold in the 200m race, and a bronze in the 100m.

Russell Whiting also won a gold medal in the 100m, and a silver in the 200m, and Sean Price was the other gold medal winner following his efforts in the 400m. In addition, Barrie Roberts won a silver and a bronze medal from his 800m and 1500m events, as did Oliver Williams over the same distances, but in different age category races.

Master veteran Mark Wyndham Jones won an incredible hat-trick of silver medals in the DT1K, HT4K, and JT500 events, plus a bronze medal in the SP4K, and plaudits for Paul Yeoman and Martin Tucker for their individual silver medals in their respective events.

And some other excellent awards won by Phil Rees, who collected two bronze medals, with Mel James, and Chris Pruski both deservedly winning individual bronze medals in their chosen events.

 

*The Welsh Masters Ladies team outshone the men this time at the BMAL championships by winning a total of 31 medals including 16 gold, 5 silver and 10 bronze medals.

It was a proud moment this weekend for athletics coach, MC and promoter, John Hatton as he saw his new running protegee  Sharon Buckley – a well-known former North Wales midwife - cross the finish line at the challenging Conwy half-marathon with a remarkable time. John, who is heavily involved with North Wales Road Runners , Conwy parkrun , and is also a keen supporter and promoter of a host of charity events, confirmed: “Over the last 6 months I have been training Sharon, who is 60, to run her first half-marathon which she did today in 2.34.17, which is a fantastic achievement. “Sharon was a highly respected midwife in North Wales, and at one time she received an award as the top midwife in the Betsi Cadwalader Health Board for her dedicated service to the community.” *John Hatton was on hand last Sunday morning

Photos by John Hatton and Lesley Goodson. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com   There was a great turn-out of some thirty-one North Wales Road Runners amongst a massive entry of nearly 3,000 mixed ability athletes, who took on the mighty challenge of the Conwy half-marathon last Sunday. Described as one of the toughest half-marathons in the country, and following a picturesque but extremely tough course from Conwy Castle to Llandudno and around the Great Orme, some six members claimed podium places, including one age cat victory, two second places, and three third places, in addition to claiming numerous PBs. Martin Green  who has dual registration for both NWRRC and  Meirionnydd RC , had a fine run after finishing 9th overall with a chip time of just 1 hour 17 minutes and 3 seconds, and he was 2nd in his M50 age cat.  Jo

Run over mountain trails, farm tracks, and tarmac, it’s one of the toughest ever marathons, yet it also included some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. The event   has twice been voted the  Best British Marathon , and the demanding course which encircles Yr Wyddfa – the highest peak in Wales – has served to makes this an iconic event in the running calendar. URGENT APPEAL TO HELP SAVE MENAI TRACK AND FIELD CLUB FROM FOLDING... Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   Georgina Seguin from the Menai Track and Field club, and an active member of the NW Cross Country League, is urgently appealing for support from the North Wales community to help save the club from folding! She confirmed this week: “Menai track & field is a successful NW athletics club with over 170 juniors and 20 seniors, but unfortunately due to lack of volunteers the future of the club is uncertain. We need to fill key committee roles within the club including chair, treasurer, secretary, plus a number of other roles. “Without these roles the club cannot run. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   A trio of Road Runners took part in the Porth Eirias 10k race last Saturday morning and they all gained podium places and recorded some excellent results. Stuart Culverhouse  finished in 8th place overall in 41.24 and he was 2nd in his M50 age cat, whilst  Carla Green  was on top form again as the 1st female finisher, (11th overall), and she won her F50 age cat in 42.14, whilst master veteran  Mike Hayton  enjoyed another good performance in 99th place, and he also won his M70 age cat in 59.42. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   Conwy parkrun attracted the usual mix of half-term entrants, visitors, and both social and club runners to another sunny but cool morning at the RSPB Nature Reserve. The  Road Runners  had a dozen members involved with  Jonathan Kettle  making a welcome return after a holiday break, and he finished 4th overall and won his VM50 age cat in just 19 minutes and 10 seconds.  Colleague  Will Williams  tried to chase Jonathan down, and he was just one place and twenty-three seconds behind him in 19.33, and he 2nd in the same age cat.  Steve Mason  finished 24th in 22.09, and  Karl Morris  was 28th in 22.19.  Sion Thomas  finished in 39th place in 23.05, with  Tony Price-Jones  49th, and heading back to his best in 23.44, with  Daniel Hennell  hot o
