About the Author - Will Cockerell (*pictured left).

Will Cockerell is a sports writer, athletics coach, and distance runner. He worked for several years at the fledgling news digest The Week and in the early 2000s wrote for numerous Premiership football websites; was chief reporter for the televised World Series of Backgammon, and contributed commentaries for the online service Guerilla Cricket

His column “Will’s World” began at Athletics Weekly in 2007, and his first book “The 50 Greatest Marathon Races of all Time” was described by The Times: “at last the marathon has found a book worthy of its long and epic journey.”

At Belgrave he has turned in some 350 races in 24 years and holds numerous club appearance records including most scoring runs at the Surrey League, Southern cross, National cross and Southern 12 Stage.

He served as club captain for four years, club secretary for seven and a combined 13 years as Team manager for the men and women’s Road & Country. He has coached numerous individuals, and both senior and junior running groups at the club.

His two children, Seb & Imogen are both keen Belgravians, and he lives in Wimbledon, just up the road from Belgrave Hall.

About the Book

For a period of nearly 50-years in the 20th Century, Belgrave Harriers boasted one of the finest road and country squads on the planet. However, by the end of the mid 1970’s, their era was drawing to a close, and nearly 25-years of modest returns were on the way.

But by the late 1990’s, under pioneering, fresh management, the time was right to shoot for glory again. What followed was a “roaring, rampage of revenge,” in which their men dominated the landscape with an electrifying burst of form over both surfaces for more than a decade.

After a minor lull, post Covid has seen a major rebuild with the potential for another glorious era.

And the 21st Century hasn’t just been about the men.The Belles have also enjoyed much success, scoring dozens of major titles up and down the land, and they too have built a squad that could have a wonderful future.

Two teams. Countless memories. This is their story.
