Male and female course records smashed at the Mish Mash Bethel 5k.
Report by Don Hale.
There was a good turn-out of some 102 athletes at the Mish Mash Bethel 5k race last Wednesday night, which attracted a large number of elite and club athletes, where both the male and female course records smashed!
Dion Griffith (Meirionnydd RC) was the overall winner and the record-breaker with an outstanding performance with a great chip time of just 15 minutes and 5 seconds, and his club claimed eight out of the first ten finishing places.
This included Owen Roberts, who finished second in 15.09, and Adam Jones, third in 15.30. And quite amazingly in this crazy fast-dash event, the first eight finishers all dipped under 17-minutes, and the first thirteen under 18-minutes.
Gemma Moore (Eryri Harriers) was the female record-breaker with another outstanding run, finishing in 16th place overall, and she also won her F40 age cat, with a new championship winning time of 18.40. Her club colleague Elliw Roberts was second (22nd overall) in 19.32, with Emma Alofs (Cybi Striders) third in 20.49.
*Some other notable results included: Martin Green (Meirionnydd RC) 9th in 17.12, and he won his M50 age cat, with Jonathan Kettle (NWRRC) 13th and second in the same cat as Martin in 17.59, and Arwel Lewis was 53rd and won his M65 cat in 23.48.
*A couple of other local runners were: - Hannah Griffith (NWRRC) who finished in 84th place in 26.56, and she was third in her F50 age cat, whilst Peter Johnson was 87th in 27.55, and he too finished third in his M45 cat.
*Arwel Lewis from Eryri Harriers later confirmed: “We had seventeen members from the club on this out & back course, with a loop of the village. It was very warm, but not the extreme hot weather conditions experienced in other parts of the UK.
“Both the male and female course records were broken with the first four finishing inside the previous course record with Eryri's Ian Edwards 8th in a time of 16.57.
"And Gemma Moore continues to break records, taking the win in a course record time of 18.40 ahead of her club colleague and previous course record holder Elliw Haf Roberts 19.32 with Emma Alofs (Cybi Striders) 3rd 20.49. Well done to everyone who supported the event and to the officials and volunteers for a well organised race.”
