Nearly six hundred elite, club, and social runners competed in the Abergele 5k and 10k races on Sunday with many recording some very fast chip times in near perfect weather conditions along the promenade.

And quite a number of entrants remarkably took part in both events, and in the earlier 5k race with 196 entrants, this was won by Ed Slaughter (Swansea Harriers) in just 15 minutes and 19 seconds, with Andrew Moore (Bangor University AC) second in 16.27, and Aaron Dodwell a very close third in 16.28.

The first female finisher was Elinor Mattey (Parc Bryn Bach RC) in 18.13, with Hannah Thomas (Maldwyn Harriers) the runner-up in 18.55, and Joanne Henderson (Denbigh Harriers) third in 19.05.

*North Wales Road Runners had three entrants and they each won their respective age categories with impressive results, and included master veteran Kevin Slattery 29th in 21.27, and he won his M70 cat, whilst vet Karen Butler won her F65 cat in 23.14, as the 10th female finisher, and Jenny Appleton won her F55 cat as the 12th female in 24.18.

In the 10k race, the winner was Matthew Skaife (Mossley Hill AC) in 32 minutes and 26 seconds, with Andrew Moore (Bangor University AC) completing a unique runner-up double following his earlier 5k result. Andrew recorded a very good time of 32.52 and he was followed by James Yarwood (Wrexham AAC) in 34.33.

And Stefan Sayer (Menai T&F) also celebrated a good result in a very close 4th place in 34.38, and Ed Slaughter (Swansea Harriers) - who won the earlier 5k race - was also in top form in 5th place in 36.06.

Anna Drinkwater (Eryri Harriers) won the ladies race in 38.35, with Hannah Thomas (Maldwyn Harriers) completing an identical second place double in both the 5k and 10k events just like Andrew Moore, to finish well in 40.45, with Zoe Jones (Cybi Striders) third in 43.38.

*North Wales Road Runners entered six members, although promising young athlete Joe Culverhouse held a dual registration with (Colwyn Bay AAC), and he enjoyed an exceptional run to finish 9th overall out of 386 entrants in the 10k race, and he was second in his age cat in 38.01.

International track star Steve Gardner ran well in 10th place in 38.13, and he won his F60 age cat; whilst Joe’s father, Stuart Culverhouse finished 32nd in 42.12 and second M50. And well done to the female duo of Jenny Appleton and Kay Hatton, with Jenny – another dual race entrant – finishing second in her F55 cat as the 27th female in 50.08.

In addition, Kay Hatton won her F60 age cat as the 31st female athlete in 50.53; with master vet Rob Fryer 146th in 56.39. *The full results are available on the RunWales website.
