Occasionally, within my role as a journalist, author, and general nosey parker, I come across certain individuals who have a remarkable background and an amazing story to tell. 

Octogenarian Joy Bloumis, from Victoria, in Australia, is one such person, who has just published an incredible new book about a mysterious and dramatic episode in her life that finally reveals the facts about an amazing young woman’s daring journey just before, during, and after WW2, who is linked to a family member.
Her determined quest for the truth, and her extensive and dedicated work delving into many historic archives, war records, and family history sites, has produced a fascinating true account about a young female nurse – Roza Hamer - who fled Poland during WW2 only to find herself trapped in Russia just as the Nazi’s invaded her homeland, and then forced to join the Soviet Army!

The story follows her dramatic life and problematic journey as she eventually escaped from Russia and travelled across war-torn Europe before joining her brother in China, and then later settled in the new State of Israel.

Roza Hamer always knew she wanted to be the best nurse possible, and when her brothers’ wanted her to join them as they fled Poland because of the rise in antisemitism Roza refused, remaining employed as a nurse in a general hospital. 

However, when Germany invaded Poland, Roza eventually fled to Russia, leaving her family and became immediately conscripted into the Russian Army! 

There, she faced starvation, disease, and the daily threat of a German victory. 

When the war ended Roza was reunited with her younger brother in China, however war between the Communists and the Nationalists became alarming for Europeans, and Rosa had to leave once again, this time immigrating to Israel.

This is one of the most gruelling challenges in the country, and for this experienced endurance athlete, his demanding journey began at Holyhead’s Breakwater Park, and followed a continuous loop covering some 131 miles, and just over 11k elevation along the island’s picturesque coastal pathway. This event was also part of the  North Wales Regional Half-Marathon Championships , and it also attracted many top athletes from all around the UK, and it was well organised by RunWales. Report by Don Hale donhaleblog.blogspot.com/2025   At the tail end of the holiday season, and with the weather still reasonable, most North Wales parkruns still recorded bumper attendances boosted by a host of visiting athletes. At the  Newborough Forest parkrun , seven out of the first ten finishers were all visitors from varied parts of the country, and they also recorded some excellent times.  The same applied to nearby  Nant y Pandy , with six out of the first ten finishers making their course debuts, and many other events also reported increased number from travelling runners. Report by Don Hale. donhaleblog.blogspot.com/2025 Martin and Carla Green both won their respective veteran age categories at the Golden Ball 20-mile race on Sunday, which part of the Lancaster Races series of events. Now competing for  Meirionnydd RC , Martin was in fine form again, and he finished 5th overall and won his MV50 cat in a very good time of 1 hour 57 minutes and 54 seconds, with Carla, from  North Wales Road Runners , also winning her FV50 age cat in 46th place, and she was the fourth female finisher in 2.30.21.
