It was a good turn-out at the Helena Tipping 10k race at Wrexham last Sunday with fifteen North Wales Road Runners in action, and they claimed four prestigious podium places

Super veteran Sandy Johnston was perhaps the pick of the pack this week after winning his MV75 age cat with another outstanding display and a remarkable chip time of just 46 minutes and 18 seconds, finishing in 226th place out of nearly 700 entrants. 

And Sandy’s time also set a new North Wales Regional record, taking 14-seconds off Emyr Davies’ previous best of 46.32, set in Caernarfon in 2019.

Young Harry Driscoll actually led the team home in 78th place in 37.32, with Carla Green next in 142nd spot overall in 40.49. Carla was the 20th female, and she also finished 3rd in her VW50 age cat. Benjamin Brummitt was also in good form, and he was 145th in 41.06, whilst Steve Mason finished in 163rd place in 41.51.

James Jones and Sion Thomas enjoyed a good tussle with James 176th in 42.43, with Sion just fourteen-seconds adrift in 42.57 for 182nd place. Cheryl Frost was another athlete on fire, and she finished 3rd in her VW55 cat in 241st place overall, and the 43rd female in 47.19.

Nicola Wylie ran well in 271st place in 49.10, and master veteran Rob Fryer claimed a deserved 3rd place in his MV70 cat in 52.35 in 320th place. Kelly Marie Alford and her partner Cai Roberts ran the course together and finished together in 55.43 in 364th and 365th places respectively, whilst Nia Lister was 398th in 58.30, with Vicky Taylor 420th in 1.00.22, and Rachel Morris 464th in 1.06.13.

*The race was won by Marc Scott (Richmond & Zetland Harriers) in 28.27, with Omar Ahmed (Birchfield Harriers 2nd in 28.39, and his club colleague Kadar Omar was 3rd in 28.58. *Praise too for Martin Green, who has recently joined Meirionnydd RC as his new first claim club from NWRRC, and he finished 33rd overall and won his MV45 age cat in 33.46.

*The 1st female finisher was Anna Bracegirdle (Salford Harriers) in 33.34, following a very close finish with Sonia Samuels (Sale Harriers), who was 2nd in 33.47, and Carla Davies (Preston Harriers), was 3rd in 36.00

Photos by John Hatton and Lesley Goodson. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com   There was a great turn-out of some thirty-one North Wales Road Runners amongst a massive entry of nearly 3,000 mixed ability athletes, who took on the mighty challenge of the Conwy half-marathon last Sunday. Described as one of the toughest half-marathons in the country, and following a picturesque but extremely tough course from Conwy Castle to Llandudno and around the Great Orme, some six members claimed podium places, including one age cat victory, two second places, and three third places, in addition to claiming numerous PBs. Martin Green  who has dual registration for both NWRRC and  Meirionnydd RC , had a fine run after finishing 9th overall with a chip time of just 1 hour 17 minutes and 3 seconds, and he was 2nd in his M50 age cat.  Jo

URGENT APPEAL TO HELP SAVE MENAI TRACK AND FIELD CLUB FROM FOLDING... She confirmed this week: “Menai track & field is a successful NW athletics club with over 170 juniors and 20 seniors, but unfortunately due to lack of volunteers the future of the club is uncertain. We need to fill key committee roles within the club including chair, treasurer, secretary, plus a number of other roles. “Without these roles the club cannot run. Run over mountain trails, farm tracks, and tarmac, it’s one of the toughest ever marathons, yet it also included some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. Stuart Culverhouse  finished in 8th place overall in 41.24 and he was 2nd in his M50 age cat, whilst  Carla Green  was on top form again as the 1st female finisher, (11th overall), and she won her F50 age cat in 42.14, whilst master veteran  Mike Hayton  enjoyed another good performance in 99th place, and he also won his M70 age cat in 59.42. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   Conwy parkrun attracted the usual mix of half-term entrants, visitors, and both social and club runners to another sunny but cool morning at the RSPB Nature Reserve. The  Road Runners  had a dozen members involved with  Jonathan Kettle  making a welcome return after a holiday break, and he finished 4th overall and won his VM50 age cat in just 19 minutes and 10 seconds.  Colleague  Will Williams  tried to chase Jonathan down, and he was just one place and twenty-three seconds behind him in 19.33, and he 2nd in the same age cat.  Steve Mason  finished 24th in 22.09, and  Karl Morris  was 28th in 22.19.  Sion Thomas  finished in 39th place in 23.05, with  Tony Price-Jones  49th, and heading back to his best in 23.44, with  Daniel Hennell  hot o

Will performed well in his MV50 age cat on a rather hilly and challenging course despite only just recovering from injury and seemed satisfied after finishing 29th overall in thirty-three minutes and one-second. And plaudits were also given to NWRRC member  Karen Butler  who finished 16th in her VW65-75 age cat (24th overall) and she was the1st Welsh veteran athlete in this section
