Father and son athletes Steve and Dave Gardner struck gold at the Welsh Masters track & field championships at Yate last weekend, with Dave winning a gold medal in the 1500m race, whilst his dad Dave, proudly won two gold medals in the shot put and javelin events.

Steve Gardner had a superb run in the 1500m track race recording a new PB time of 5 minutes and 9 seconds, to take the gold medal in his MV60 age cat, and beating his previous winning time from last year of 5.13.


And to add to his success, he has received notification this week from Bernie Jones, the Welsh Masters team manager, that he has been selected to represent Wales in the mid Cheshire 5k on 23rd August. 


Meanwhile Dave Gardner has probably smashed two Welsh Masters field records in both the shot and javelin with new PBs in both events. He recorded a throw of 7.69m in the shot put and 17.76m in the javelin to win a unique golden double in his MV80 age cat.


Both athletes are veteran members of Welsh Masters Athletics and North Wales Road Running Club.


After the event, Steve confirmed: “I am delighted to inform you of some excellent performances by my dad at the Welsh Masters Championships on Sunday in slightly breezy, warm, and sunny conditions. He won gold medals in the shot and javelin events recording new personal best distances.


“I anticipate that these will be ratified as new MV80 Welsh Masters records shortly. I also won a gold medal in the MV60 1500m in a new pb time beating my previous time when winning this event last year.”

He was also the 3rd British athlete and the 1st Welshman, finishing 23rd overall based on the times over seven heats. There were 72 starters.  And in the 1500m held over the past few days, he recorded another excellent PB finishing in 5.07.05, in 24th place overall, as the 4th British athlete, and once again he was understood to be the 1st Welshman. Dozens of runners pay tribute to John Dalzell at a special 5k social event on Llandudno promenade. It was great to see so many of our regional clubs represented in Carmarthenshire. Welsh Masters Athletics launches new style kit and appeal for runners for the Inter-Area challenge. Report by Rod Davies, the  Membership Secretary, Welsh Masters Athletics Limited. Report by David Gibson. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   On Thursday 22nd August saw Swansea club Tri Hard Harriers put on its second annual THH ‘5k on the Bay’ race along the Swansea Bay front between Blackpill and Oystermouth.  The course was very flat and fast, and this year produced numerous personal best times in the sell-out field of 300. Amongst many stella performances there were a few worth noting.   *Mike Roderick  of Tri Hard Harriers came in first with a time of 15:42.  *First female was  Megan Carter-Davies  of Swansea Harriers with a great time of 16:52.   *In the Veteran Female category  Stephanie Gibson  of Tri Hard Harriers was first (and second female overall) with a superb time of 18:00. In warm but very breezy conditions,  Jonathan Kettle  led the team home in 22nd place overall but said his legs felt heavy and it just wasn’t his day.  Jonathan and Carla   Green  also had a dual role, as they were both additionally representing the  North Wales Regional  team.
