North Wales Road Runner Llyr ApGeraint-Roberts was the proud winner of the Southport Sprint Duathlon event last Sunday with a determined display following his success at two 5k runs and a tough 20k bike ride.

This overall victory and his veteran age cat win came as something of a shock to the experienced GB and Welsh International athlete, as he only confirmed his attendance at the last minute after suffering from an illness all week. 


In his first 5k race run he admitted he “wasn’t feeling it,” but persevered, and eventually finished strong in 19 mins 33 secs. He then battled for honours in the 20k plus bike ride, and said he finally caught the race leader after about 4k. 

His final Duathlon Sprint event involved another hard 5k race, but he dug in well, and finished quicker than his first run in 19.13, to win the competition in style.

After the event, he said: “Southport Duathlon winner, and the winner of my age group. I’ll take that after being ill all week. That was a hard second run, and the longest I’ve done. It was really sunny and hot! There was nobody close, so it was a case of turning the legs to get home.”

Steve Gardner smashes 800m Welsh record at World Masters Athletics champs in Sweden.

Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com North Wales Road Runner, Welsh Master, and Team GB track athlete Steve Gardner smashed his own previous best record time in the 800m event during the World Masters Athletics Championships in Sweden last week with an improved time to set a new Welsh Masters Athletics record. Competing on the track in Bjorlanda, Sweden, on 15th August, for Team GB, the M60 veteran ran home in 2 minutes 22.26 seconds. He was also the 3rd British athlete and the 1st Welshman, finishing 23rd overall based on the times over seven heats. There were 72 starters.  And in the 1500m held over the past few days, he recorded another excellent PB finishing in 5.07.05, in 24th place overall, as the 4th British athlete, and once again he was understood to be the 1st Welshman. Four Road Runners wore the red vest of Wales in the Mid Cheshire 5k International race...plus other results. Brett Davis reports on the success of WMAL athletes.   Three athletes from Bexley AC represented Welsh Masters Athletics at the Inter-Area track and field championships at Corby last weekend in the throwing events. This included M50  Graham Holder,  shot, discus, and hammer, M60  Andy Rushbrook , shot and high jump, and M70  Peter Hawley  shot. The men came 6th out of 9 teams with wins from  Graham Holder  for the hammer,  Glyn Price  for the pole vault and the M60, 4 x 100m relay team ( Rod Davies ,  Brett Davis ,  Ian Broadhurst , and  Paul Williams ). It was great to see so many of our regional clubs represented in Carmarthenshire. Four age category wins for the Road Runners at Conwy parkrun - plus other results.

Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   North Wales Road Runners entered thirteen members at the Conwy parkrun last Saturday and claimed four age category wins and former NWRRC athlete Josh Keogh was the first finisher overall with an excellent finishing time of 18 minutes and 37 seconds. Starting from the RSPB Nature Reserve, this popular 5k event attracted numerous runners from various parts of the UK, in addition to welcoming back some of their own club runners following some long periods of absence. And also, it should be noted, that due to some other competing fixtures on another busy weekend, many runners took it steady in the rather heavy and humid weather.
