New venue for the Welsh Masters Outdoor T&F Championships - within the Avon/Yate Open event.

Following urgent discussions by the board of Welsh Masters Athletics Ltd, with other interested and supportive parties, the Welsh Masters championships that were set for cancellation at Aberdare, will now be staged at Yate, as described below.

Thanks to our friends from the South-West (Avon Count AA and Yate & District AC) we have now incorporated the Welsh Masters outdoor track and field championship into their inaugural Masters Open meeting at the Outdoor Sports Centre, Broad Lane, Yate BS37 7LB on Saturday 12th August.

 

There is a pretty full programme with the notable exceptions of pole vault and steeplechase. 


Entry is via the below link and needs to be made by the end of the 4th August at the latest.

 

We are still adding officials to help, as the efficiency of the field events in particular will benefit from extra officials. Welsh Masters are paying the expenses of all officials and providing all the medals although we will not be receiving any income from the event, as this is too late in the day for any compromise arrangement. 

 

And again, due to the unusual nature of this event, we will identify the Welsh Masters members who enter, and medals will only be given to them, rather than our normal policy of additionally giving gold medals to guests who win their events.

Report and photos courtesy of race official Craig Jones. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com   Last Saturday (St David’s Day, March 1st) saw the very  successful  completion of the challenging  21st Dolgarrog Pipe Dream fell race, and the first counter of the North Wales Series.  It was a record turnout, with 139 runners in total. The weather was perfect, with sunny skies and no wind, and a course that was ideal underfoot. Gavin Roberts  ( Calder Valley ), won overall, breaking the V40 record, taking 44 seconds off the mark set by Math Roberts last year. Gavin ran home in 33.26. Placed third overall by the top of the steps, he overhauled the front two to take the lead and the win.  Kieran Wynne-Cattanach  was 2nd in 34.05, with  Rhys Jones  ( Hebog ) 3rd in 34.31. This is a copy of my report in the NW Weekly News today, including a good story about the controversy concerning the new cycle track at the RSPB Nature Reserve, that will affect the Conwy parkrun for about 14 weeks, and may even put the future of this popular event into jeopardy. Extensive construction work is now expected to commence from 8th March onwards, and for a period of about 14-weeks which will temporarily impact on part of the existing parkrun and riverside route, from near the RSPB Nature Reserve to the Conwy Cob access bridge. Anglesey are  photos courtesy of John Hatton. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com   Nearly 1,400 runners were finally able to take part in either the  Jones O Gymru Anglesey Half Marathon, or the optional 10k  races  over the famous Menai Suspension Bridge last Sunday morning, which was included within the route once again for the first time in several years due to essential maintenance work on this iconic attraction. Tagged by the event organisers  Always Aim High , as the most beautiful half marathon in North Wales, much of the course offered spectacular views across Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and attracted both club and social runners from all over Wales and the UK. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   It was another good turn-out at Conwy parkrun last Saturday due to a large number of visiting athletes, but the conditions underfoot were horrendous once again, with another swamp-like 5k course for the 300 plus entrants. Despite the waterlogged and challenging route, the first twelve finishers all dipped under the twenty-minute mark, with SW20 runner  Andrew Moore  the first man home with a new PB of 16 minutes and 27 seconds. The second placed finisher was visitor VM40  Aaron Saxton  (Manchester Tri Club), who was pleased with his debut time of 17.41, with fellow VM40 athlete  Frazer Slade  3rd with another PB of 17.52.  The first two female runners were both teenage visitors, with JW15-17  Cara Scott , the first lady in ...
